About Our Coordinator
Dr. Medadi E Ssentanda is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of African Languages, Makerere University, Uganda. He is also a Research Associate in the Department of General Linguistics, Stellenbosch University. He has a PhD in General Linguistics from Stellenbosch University, South Africa. His research interests are in early literacy development, language policy in the school context, multilingual education, and the linguistic landscape. He has extensively published on issues of mother tongue education in rural schools in Uganda and teachers’ perceptions and practices versus the language policy and the thematic curriculum. His widely quoted publication focuses on the challenges of teaching reading in Uganda with a focus on curriculum guidelines and the language policy that encourages the introduction of the reading skill in the mother tongue and English. He extends this study by exploring the difficulties that teachers and learners in rural areas in Uganda face when learning and acquiring English within the mother tongue education programme. Medadi has also explored the linguistic landscape in Uganda with particular interest on the language ideologies embedded in the choice of languages on the school signage as well as shop signs in Kampala. Both these studies are interrogated within the context of Uganda’s language policy that has English and Swahili as the first and second official languages. https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5420-4744
