The Makerere University Centre for Language and Communication Services was initially the Department of Languages created by the University Council in July 1974 as a way of providing an official academic venue for teaching and promoting both European and African Languages and Linguistics. The department was elevated to the Level of an institute in November 1995 and since then the Institute has been operating as a semi-autonomous unit within the Faculty of Arts.
Language being the custodian of culture and identity, the School of Languages, Literature & Communication is at the forefront in promoting, modernizing and internationalizing, especially Ugandan Languages through teaching and research in these Languages.
The Centre provides quite a number of services to a wide range of both local and foreign clients and is run by a dedicated Centre Management Committee that markets and supervises services in the following areas.
